What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove unwanted body fat. Liposuction involves separating and removing small areas of fat that are usually harder to target through exercise and a healthy diet.

At the Rae clinic, clinical director, plastic surgeon, Dr Ali Ghanem, specialises in liposuction treatments combined with the BodyTite protocol. The BodyTite protocol ensures that the skin remains tight, avoiding any post-liposuction sagging usually associated with fat loss.

We are currently offering free online consultations for clients with body sculpting and fat removal concerns. You can get in touch with us using our online chat or you can request a callback.

The Rae Factor

Disposing of unwanted fat in one area can be an excellent opportunity to utilise it in a different area of the body where it might be helpful. “Natural fillers” from a patient’s own tissue is increasing in popularity. It can be used to increase volume in different locations in the face, breasts or even buttocks. You can discuss this option during your consultation.

What is Liposuction for?

Dr. Ghanem performs all body plastic surgery procedures at a London CQC-registered Hospital where he holds practicing privileges.

Dr. Ghanem performs Liposuction treatments in the following areas:

  • Abdomen (upper and lower)
  • Forearm, Upper arm, Upper arm fold
  • Buffalo hump (between the neck and the back)
  • Back, Sacrum and Flanks
  • Buttocks, Outer thighs, Back thighs
  • Inner knees, calves, ankles
  • Neck & Jawline
  • Breasts

How does it work?

Liposuction

We perform Liposuction under general anaesthesia, thus ensuring a painless procedure. However, if this is of any concern, other options or treatments are available and can be discussed during your consultation.

During the procedure, our surgeon would first mark the areas of your body where fat would be removed. Our surgeon will then:

  • Inject a solution containing anaesthetic and medicine, to reduce blood loss, bruising and swelling
  • We use the PAL (Power Assisted Liposuction) to break down the fat. The PAL technique is clinically approved and proven to significantly reduce bruising.
  • A small incision will be made to insert a suction tube in order to remove fat.
  • During the fat removal, our doctor will also drain any excess body fluids.

The procedure usually takes one to three hours, depending on the breadth of the targeted area and amount of fat.

BodyTite™

The BodyTite Radio Frequency (RF) hand-piece is inserted beneath the skin through a tiny incision (often times the same liposuction insertion will be used to avoid unnecessarily scaring). The RF precise heating effect will then target stubborn areas of fat while instigating a tightening effect on the surrounding tissue.

FAQ

How do I know if I am suitable for treatment?

For women, liposuction is more commonly used around the stomach, hips and thighs, while men, often use liposuction to treat gynecomastia and other fat areas around the chest and torso.
If one or more of the following applies to you, liposuction might be the right course of action:
1. You have excess fat deposits on your hips, belly, thighs, neck or chest, that do not respond to diet or exercise.
2. Certain areas of your body are not in proportion to the rest of your figure. The ideal liposuction patient has localised fat deposits & good skin texture and tone.

It is also important to have realistic expectations regarding liposuction results.
For example, liposuction is designed specifically to target fatty tissue, not to improve the appearance of loose skin. Other body contouring procedures such as tummy tuck or body lift, maybe a better fit for you. Additionally, liposuction can improve your shape, appear thinner and fitter, but it is not a weight-loss method. While some overweight patients can benefit from the reshaping effects, the most satisfied patients tend to be happy with their weight prior to surgery.

Can tummy tuck and liposuction be done simultaneously?

The short answer is yes. However, your specific treatment plan will be discussed with you during your consultation and prior to your surgery.

Does liposuction work and how long does it last?

Liposuction is a permanent removal of unwanted excess fat deposits from the body. To exemplify, when you lose weight by dieting, your fat cells shrink in size, but they do not disappear. Liposuction is excellent for exercise-resistant fat deposits (the existence and location of which differs between individuals).

How much Does Liposuction cost?

Liposuction procedures are quoted depending on the number of areas being treated. Typical liposuction procedures start from £3,290 (1 area) , £4190 (2 areas) , and £4,990 (3 areas) any additional areas will be priced separately. BodyTite protocol combination would be priced separately and according to need.

Costs are fully inclusive, thus your quoted price includes your surgeon fee, theatre fee, anaesthetist, sedation, prescriptions and compression garments. It also includes all aftercare follow-ups.

What can i expect post procedure?

Immediately post-operation, the area treated will be a bit bruised and swollen, and slightly numb to the touch.
You will be handed a compression garment to reduce the swelling and to improve long-term liposuction results. It should be worn for a minimum of two weeks. Most patients can shower after 2 to 3 days but bathing is normally discouraged and the compression garments should not be worn during showers.
Post-procedure pain is not significant. About half of our patients do not need painkillers and others usually treat pain with off-the-counter medications such as paracetamol.
In most cases you would be able to start normal daily activities and exercise as soon as you are comfortable, usually when the stitches are removed (7-10 days post-surgery). Most patients return to work after a week.
Infection is very rare.

When would i see results?

Liposuction results vary according to the individual.
You will likely see some results immediately after surgery, but swelling and bruising associated with post-operation will disguise the results. Most people see results from 6 weeks and final results 6 – 12 months after the operation.

Would it leave scars?

The liposuction procedure is performed with a tiny incision leaving minimal scars.
To make scarring as insignificant as possible, Dr Ghanem uses fine cannulas and intrinsic techniques that allow him to operate without the risk of scarring.
Dr Ghanem’s extensive experience with the procedure also allows him to use fewer incisions as possible and avoid a second scar in the same area.
The incisions necessary for liposuction should not deter you from treatment. You need to be aware and discuss this issue as one of your concerns during your consultation.

What are the potential risks?

Our doctors would inform you regarding the full risks of the procedure during your consultation. There are risks associated with Liposuction: Numbness (right after surgery), possible infection (rare), internal organ punctures (extremely rare), kidney or heart problems (extremely rare), pulmonary complications (extremely rare), and anaesthesia-related mortality (extremely rare).
