Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes excessive sweating, is known to be uncomfortable and painful.

Primary hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which an individual has a broken heat regulation system. We call it primary because there is no known cause for it. Unlike secondary hyperhidrosis, which can be a side effect of medication or hormonal changes such as menopause or other hormonal abnormalities.

Our recommended doctors offer a variety of hyperhidrosis treatments at their clinics. These are mainly drug injections and energy-based treatments.

The drugs are injectable prescription-only medicine available in different brands. They are licensed in the UK for the management of severe hyperhidrosis of the axillae (armpits). In many cases, they are used in combination with a needle-free injection device called the Enerjet 2.0. This device can painlessly administer the drug to different places of the body, including the hands, armpits and feet.

Notably, the process of combining Enerjet 2.0 with drugs for managing hyperhidrosis is a new technique, only practised in the UK by Prof. Ghanem and Prof. Abu-Sittah.

What is Hyperhidrosis Treatment for?

Doctors treat the following areas for Hyperhidrosis:

  • Underarms or armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis treatment)
  • Palms of the hands (palmar hyperhidrosis treatment)
  • Soles of the feet (plantar hyperhidrosis treatment)
  • Face, most commonly the forehead and scalp (facial hyperhidrosis treatment)

The treatment lasts between 3 to 4 months, and repeated treatment leads to significant alleviation of symptoms.

How Does it Work?

Hyperhidrosis treatment with toxins works by temporarily stopping the communication channels between the nerves and the sweat glands. Therefore, it reduces the amount of sweating that occurs for a short period of time.

Prof. Ghanem and Prof. Abu-Sittah both use the Enerjet 2.0 system which is a no-needle system that uses air pressure to introduce the drug into the skin. The air pressure is so strong that it can cross the skin barrier easily and reach the sweat glands.

The pain level reduces significantly since there is no needle involved. Most importantly, palmar (Hands) Hyperhidrosis can be very painful. Using the Enerjet 2.0 dramatically reduces pain and makes the treatment bearable for the patient.

FAQ

How do I know if I am suitable for Hyperhidrosis treatment?

During a consultation with your doctor you will discuss where the excessive sweating is affecting you and diagnose the hyperhidrosis. Your doctor can discuss treatment options with you and will be able to prescribe the toxin if they establish it as the most appropriate solution for you after other methods of sweat reduction, such as strong antiperspirants, have proven ineffective.

If you are pregnant or currently breastfeeding you will not be suitable for the toxin treatment and will need to await the period of weaning your child before embarking on a treatment plan.

What can I expect to happen during Hyperhidrosis treatment?

Your doctor will identify the pattern of excessive sweating and mark it before the treatment. When treating the underarms, you will be required to shave any hair before your appointment.

Using the Enerjet system to deliver the toxin makes it a quicker treatment as it can treat a larger area at once. The doctor positions the device over the treated area (armpits, the palm of the hand, sole of the foot or areas of the face, such as the forehead) to target the sweat glands. The treatment lasts around 30-45 minutes depending on the area being treated.

How many treatments will I need?

Usually, a Hyperhidrosis treatment is completed within one treatment session. You can undergo repeat treatments when the effects wear off.

What are the possible side effects?

The toxins take approximately 5 days to begin to take effect and reduce excess sweat in the treated area. Expect to notice an increasing reduction in sweating in the days following your treatment.

During this time, you may experience a feeling of tightness in the areas treated as the product gets to work. The Enerjet device can produce a rash-like appearance on the skin immediately following treatment, with small, raised bumps which mark the entry point for each jet of Botulinum Toxin.

These will reduce in the first few hours after treatment. If treating the palms of the hands or soles of the feet, these may feel a bit tender to the touch for a few hours following treatment.

What results can I expect?

After up to a week, the toxin will take effect and you will notice a reduction of sweat in the treated area. Over time and repeated treatments, hyperhidrosis can be effectively managed to the point that you can live a normal life without worrying about excessive sweating.

How long will the results of Hyperhidrosis treatment last?

The effects of the toxin last between 2 and 4 months, sometimes longer.

How much does Hyperhidrosis treatment cost?

The cost of the hyperhidrosis treatment with the Enerjet 2.0 cost will depend on the area requiring treatment. For example, in the UK, prices for treatment of excessive sweating in the underarm usually start from £750. Whereas, without the Enerjet 2.0, it’s £490.
