What is Aerolase?

Aerolase is an American-based award-winning manufacturer of lasers, whose devices are used around the world. They manufacture their devices using a patented laser therapy technology with over 20 years of research and development. Both the Neo Elite and Era Elite laser devices offer several benefits for patients in comparison to other laser-based treatments:

  • The Aerolase devices have a patented short pulse (300-650 microseconds), allowing it to deliver highly effective results with minimal downtime.
  • The cosmetic treatments are contactless, which means they deliver the laser treatment without touching the aerolase device to the skin. This offers a more hygienic and comfortable experience for the patient.
  • The skin doesn’t need to be cooled before the procedure with cooling gels or sprays, resulting in a more convenient procedure.

Furthermore, both the Neo Elite and Era Elite lasers have their own unique and separate benefits, which are explained below in further detail.

Aerolase Neo Elite

The Neo Elite device is a Nd: YAG (1064nm) Laser that is able to deliver a high amount of power within a short pulse duration (precisely 650 microseconds) into the internal (dermal) layers of the skin.

The Neo Elite laser can be used on all skin tones, thus minimising the risk of burns on hyperpigmented skin. This specific type of Laser is considered to be the gold standard to treat vascular conditions (including bruising).

What Does Neo Elite Treat?

The Neo Elite laser has proven highly effective at rejuvenating the skin and treating the following common conditions:

  • Acne
  • Melasma (skin discolouration)
  • Psoriasis
  • Rosacea and redness
  • Warts
  • Bruises
  • Spider veins
  • Angiomas
  • Cutaneous, vascular, and pigmented lesions

Notably, the device has proven to be 100% effective at improving melasma, which is notoriously difficult to treat. In addition, it has been found to be effective at clearing rosacea by 83% after 4 treatments, and can clear facial veins by 80% following 2 treatments.

Neo Elite Treatment

The Neo Elite device comes with a handpiece through which the doctor applies the laser energy onto the skin. The handpiece is rotated around the area being treated without touching the skin, while the laser penetrates the skin in short pulses. The cosmetic procedure takes only a few minutes (depending on the size of the area being treated) and does not require the administration of anaesthetic or cooling gels beforehand.

How Much Does Neo Elite Cost?

The cost of a Neo Elite treatment session will depend on the size of the area and skin condition being treated. Therefore, your surgeon will determine an exact price following a consultation. In general, prices for a single Aerolase Neo Elite treatment in the UK starts from £500.

Aerolase Era Elite

The Era Elite laser is designed to renew the surface of the skin (the epidermal layer), thus achieving similar results to laser skin resurfacing treatments performed using a CO2 laser. Similar to the Neo Elite laser, Era Elite delivers a high amount of energy in short pulse durations (300 microseconds).

However, the Era Elite device has a narrower beam which delivers a higher fluence (the energy delivered per unit area). Therefore, it is effective at treating the entire facial area as well as delivering a more precise treatment by targeting smaller areas of the skin including difficult facial contours such as the nasal area. The Era Elite and Neo Elite lasers can be combined to treat both the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin.

What Does Era Elite Treat?

Era Elite is an Er:YAG laser with a wavelength of 2940nm. This is a suitable wavelength for performing laser skin resurfacing procedures which are designed to improve the tone and texture on the surface layer of the skin.

Therefore, the Era Elite laser is predominantly used for treating signs of ageing which include wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, deep furrows, and crow’s feet. However, it is also effective at preventing signs of ageing. This makes Era Elite a suitable cosmetic treatment for anyone aged 18-80 that wants to maintain a youthful aesthetic appearance.

Furthermore, Era Elite can also treat the following skin concerns which affect the epidermal layer of the skin:

  • Scars
  • Lesions
  • Sun damage
  • Moles
  • Keratoses (scaly patches caused by the growth of keratin)
  • Large pores
  • Skin tags
  • Milia (small white cysts)
  • Freckles
  • Xanthelasma (yellow fat deposits beneath the skin)

Era Elite Treatment

The Aerolase treatment using the Era Elite device is similar to that of the Neo Elite procedure. However, the controlled pulses from the Era Elite laser allows doctors to customise the treatment according to the patient’s skin concerns. This means the doctor is able to precisely deliver the level of ablation (removal of skin tissue) that is needed to achieve the desired outcome.

The laser can be used in a non-ablative, fractional ablative, or full ablative mode without damaging the dermal layer of the skin. The non-ablative mode can stimulate the production of collagen in order to improve the tone and texture of the skin without causing any damage to its surface layer. This mode is effective for treating mild wrinkles and pigmentation, and is suitable for dark skin tones.

Whereas, the fractional ablative mode creates controlled micro-wounds that encourages the skin to repair and regenerate itself, while the full ablative mode removes the epidermal layer for complete skin regeneration. These modes can address skin concerns that extend deep into the epidermis, such as acne scars and significant signs of ageing.

How Much Does Era Elite Cost?

The cost of an Era Elite treatment session will depend on the size of the area being treated as well as the requirements of your skin type and skin concerns. Therefore, your doctor will determine an exact price following a consultation. However, prices in the UK for one treatment session starts from £500 for a small area and £3,900 for the full face and neck.

Aerolase Recovery Time

The Neo Elite treatments require no downtime. Therefore, you’ll be able to carry on with your normal routine immediately after the cosmetic treatment. However, you may notice some redness in the treated area which usually dissipates after a few hours.

The downtime for the Era Elite treatments depend on the mode in which it is used. The non-ablative mode does not require any downtime. However, fractional ablative treatments have a downtime of around 4 days while a full ablative treatment requires a downtime of 4-7 days.

Aerolase and Chemical Peels

The Aerolase Neo Elite laser when combined with a chemical peel can be highly effective at treating melasma (skin discolouration). The chemical peel is a substance that contains active bio-stimulating and regenerative ingredients that can peel off the damaged surface layer of the skin, which in turn will encourage the growth of a new healthier layer of skin.

The Neo Elite treatment can treat the hyperpigmentation that affects the deeper dermal layer of the skin, while the chemical peel can treat the hyperpigmentation that occurs in the superficial epidermal layer of the skin. Furthermore, the laser is able to break down large hyperpigmented areas into smaller areas which you can treat with the exfoliating effects of the chemical peel. Therefore, combining both cosmetic treatments can produce a more significant improvement when treating melasma.

FAQ

Can Aerolase get rid of acne scars?

The Aerolase Era Elite technology can treat acne scars by ablating the skin tissue which in turn encourages skin regeneration. However, since Era Elite only treats the epidermal layer of the skin, it is only effective at treating shallow acne scars such as rolling scars.

There are several different cosmetic treatments for acne scars that may be more suitable for you depending on your skin type and the type of acne scars.

How many Aerolase treatments will I need?

With both the Neo Elite and Era Elite laser, the recommended number of treatments will depend on the type of skin concern and the size of the area being treated. The most appropriate course of treatment for your needs will be determined upon a consultation with your doctor. In general, it takes 4-6 treatments spaced 2-5 weeks apart in order to treat most indications.

Can Aerolase treat any area of the face and body?

Aerolase lasers can safely treat the skin on most areas of the face and body.

Are the treatments painful?

Aerolase treatments are painless. However, you may feel a warm sensation on your skin, which generally does not pose any discomfort for patients since the laser rotates around the area being treated. Furthermore, if using the Era Elite laser in a fractional or fully ablative mode, your doctor will apply a topical anaesthetic before the procedure to prevent any pain or discomfort.

How soon can I expect to see results?

This will depend on the skin condition being treated. However, most patients notice an immediate improvement in their skin after the cosmetic treatment. For example, some patients who are treated for acne notice an immediate reduction in breakouts. Whereas, the process of stimulating collagen in order to regenerate the skin can take between 3- 6 months. The skin will continue to improve with each subsequent cosmetic treatment.

Are the Aerolase results permanent?

The longevity of the cosmetic treatments will also depend on the skin concerns that are being treated. For example, patients who undergo the treatment for anti-ageing concerns may need to return once a year in order to maintain results. Whereas, some patients who are treated for acne don’t suffer a breakout for years, while others find their acne returning after several months.
